The Media Standards Trust has made a submission to the consultation on the Jackson Review, which closed on Monday 14th February.

Lord Jackson’s Review of Civil Litigation Costs was published in January 2010, and proposed wide-ranging reforms to Conditional Fee Agreements (CFAs) and other aspects of civil litigation. The MST submission focuses on the cost of privacy and libel cases, where CFAs are often used.

Although the MST supports reform of the libel laws, ‘it is important that we remember that CFAs were set up for a purpose – to give people who otherwise could not afford legal help access to justice… We believe the reforms, as currently proposed, would effectively end CFAs for all but a tiny few.’
